Sad Reminder

This weekend was a bit of a beat down, not that anything particularly bad happened, it's just that nothing that good went down either. I was reminded, several times might I add, of my burning hatred for the city of San Antonio. Reminder 1: Friday night Jamie, Ben and myself attempted to have a nice evening "out on the town" in good ol' San Antonio. Long story short, around 10pm we get to this restaurant downtown and it is closed for a private party, our attempts to go somewhere else nearby failed because everywhere in San Antonio closes way too early, and finally we settled on a sub par dinner at Liberty Bar (though I still hold Liberty Bar to some decent standard because I have enjoyed several meals there on previous occasions). Reminder 2: Saturday evening a group of us went to Paloma Blanca off Broadway. Though there were a few in our party displeased with the food there, I really enjoyed my meal and was ready to have a fun night out with friends. But not so fast!! Our attempts to go dancing failed miserably because apparently we are the only people in this city who like to have fun and the club was deserted so we settled on a bar and our conversations inevitably revolved around dental school, which is fine, but not an ideal Saturday night if you ask me. So am I going to complain this entire post??? No. I promise. Read on.

I have recently invested in this piano/keyboard. It has weighted keys to mimic a real piano. I'm kind of in love with it. I had my first piano lesson when I was 6 years old and played all the way through highschool. I used to play in competitions, recitals, even taught lessons as a summer job. Oddly enough when I graduated and moved out, part of the appeal was that I could finally quit the piano and never be forced to practice ever again. I didn't give piano a second thought until this past Christmas break when I was home and playing on my parents piano. It's so crazy how the wiring in our brains works, but I remembered so much I surprised myself. Sure I'm rusty, but I can still read notes and even though my fingers aren't as strong or steady as before I think all that is slowly coming back. Since I can control the volume, I've spent many restless nights playing piano without worrying about waking my neighbors in the wee hours of the morning. It's been so relaxing and really a great opportunity to forget about school a couple hours a day.

Today I slept late, did some much needed grocery shopping, stared at an intimidating pile of laundry without doing anything about it and spent majority of the day watching The Masters with a few friends. I wanted to make something quick that I knew everyone would enjoy so I took some guacamole. It's the perfect recipe for a lazy Sunday afternoon snack.

3 large Hass avocados, sliced and seeded

Cover with the juice of one lime, mash

Fold in 1/4 onion, 1 tomato (seeded), 1 clove garlic (minced),
1 handful cilantro (chopped)

Finish off with a few pinches cumin, a touch of cayenne pepper, a splash of olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. If you like a little more bite, add some more lime juice. Yum!

I'm sad that the city of San Antonio let you down this weekend. It's funny that you hate it and I'm already sad about the fact that we'll be moving in a year with our next Air Force assignment.
